  4.     As an ordained minister for 35 years in a mainline
  5. denomination, I am concerned about the decline in membership of
  6. this historic spiritual base of our nation (RELIGION, May 22). Your
  7. analysis was helpful, but what if the illness is with society
  8. itself? What if other churches are growing not because of their
  9. apparent spirituality but because they pander to the fears, greed
  10. and prejudice of those who want to avoid the sense of social
  11. responsibility for which the mainline denominations have been
  12. known?

  17.     Evangelicalism has, from my experience, provided a place to
  18. think, talk and struggle with life's meaningful questions. How can
  19. anyone be content with rear-guard religion, when one can experience
  20. a faith that provides power to live a different quality of life in
  21. this desperate world?
